This is a sweet set. I got mine a few days ago, and I think Fantagraphics did a great job on it!

I talked to some folks in the Fantagraphics office, and they're largely of the opinion that it's their best collection yet, which is really saying something.

Well, I certainly agree with them. And it's a long, long overdue collection as well.

Bill Mauldin was one of the very, very best.

Talking about the conditions Mauldin worked under - one of the cartoons reprinted in "Up Front", Mauldin's first book (a cartoon that was originally published in a field-expedient "wildcat" edition of "Star & Stripes") has a blemish on it; according to Mauldin's notes, that's a nailhole in the zinc sheet used to make the printing plate -- which was a piece of a coffin lining...
