"But the idea that a big media creation – even an old and quirky one like Gumby –"

I don't think Gumby was ever a big media creation. He was created by Art Clokey, a true hippie character, very laid back. The Gumby Theme song was written by one of the Flying Burrito Brothers, who also worked as an animator on some of the Gumby shorts. (I learned that tidbit of knowledge at a Gumby Film Festival, hosted by Clokey and his wife in the early 80s.)

The Gumby cartoon was always very trippy, very surreal, very loose and certainly non-corporate. Things making sense wasn't a very high priority in a Gumby cartoon. That was part of the appeal of Gumby.

By contrast, Art Clokey's other major creation, "Davy and Goliath," were stop motion moral fables, funded by the Lutheran Church. It was a heartfelt, but very conservative cartoon. Davy and Goliath has been mercilessly lampooned by the Cartoon Network's "Moral Orel. "
