For me "El Diablo" is the Western hero... I don't think i was even aware of this book. (I think i wasn't necessarily reading/seeing a lot of mainstream comics in '89.)

To be honest, looking at the cover from #16 (i think) with the Wikipedia article, if i had been aware of it, i might have been put off by the art (if that's typical). Not that i think it looks *bad* necessarily, just not a style that appeals to me for sopme reason.
