Photo Gallery: Anime Boston 2008
No, I have no idea who most of these characters are. Yes, I'm still impressed.

ComicMix reader (and aspiring anime/manga artist) Heather recently sent me a gallery of photos from Anime Boston 2008, heralded as "The Northeast's Largest Anime Convention." The three-day convention was held held last weekend at Hynes Convention Center.
As anyone who's attended enough anime, comics or pop culture-related conventions over the last few years will no doubt agree, the anime/manga crowd rarely phones it in when it comes to costumes. Sure, there are always a few kids who slap on a metal-plated Naruto headband and call themselves cosplayers, but by and large, the average anime fan's costume looks like the product of some serious time and effort.
So, with that in mind, I've posted some of the photos she sent me after the jump. Consider it a salute to the cosplayers at Anime Boston '08 and anime fans everywhere. Heck, I have trouble buttoning my shirt correctly most days -- I can't even imagine crafting some of the outfits in these photos.

As a rule, anime fans are better looking than comics fans, so they look better in the cosplay suits.
There was this fat (FAT) guy dressed as Jesse (yes, the girl) from Team Rocket ad WW Philly last year. It was...well, I prayed the news cameras didn't find him, I'll leave it there.

Oh, man... I REMEMBER the guy dressed as Jesse at that show! Thanks for bringing that image back into the forefront of my mind, Vinnie... *shudder*

Awesome pics! I love the cosplayer painted up as Cratos from God Of war. The girl in the "Asian goddess" outfit (the one with the outstretched arm and huge sleeve...she reminds me of the main character in Story Of Saiunkoku) looks nice too, as does the girl in the Onmyoji costume (the one with the tall black hat). The little girl in the Sailor Moon costume is adorable. It's nice to see some of the classics kept alive in cosplay form.

You think that Jesse was bad, just wait until you see Man-Fay. It's a guy who goes around to conventions dressed as Fay from Cowboy Bebop, including the tight little yellow short shorts...*shudder*

Ugh..Man-Faye..I went to a convention with him there before. Chibi-Pa in FLorida.
Ugh..the ugliest asscheeks and hairiest legs I have ever seen on a guy.
He's gorsssss

Ewww...I've only ever seen pictures. I can't imagine what seeing him in person must have been like. My sympathies... :)

My eyes. They burn.

Why did I click that? I knew I shouldn't... but I did. And now I need to find some Tabasco sauce to burn that image from my eyes.

This is a good example of why americans should never, EVER cosplay... its sad lets leave the dressing up to the japanese

Hey, Hey, Hey! Cosplayers are cosplaying for fun, not for looks (most anyways)!
Hannah (2:18 AM on Sun Mar 30, 2008)
Um. They are all bad compared to what I've seen.
^^;

I'm gonna go ahead and leave that all to the Japs..

A couple of these are not too bad. I love the little Sailor Moon, if her costume had been professionally tailored she would have been very awesome. The one with the long green wig, isn't bad either. Always try to remember the biggest difference between American and Japanese cosplay. In the US it is just a hobby, people don't usually get paid for it. In Japan you could be paid very good money, so it is really more like modeling for them.

I think cosplaying should be for everyone. Americans do it during Halloween, just because someone is born somewhere else shouldn't stop them from dressing up. It only shows you have a passion for that you enjoy. And yes, SOME in Japan get paid for it, but that goes for America too. It's just what the country views as popular. It's part of their everyday life. But even people in Japan watch cosplayers go by and go "What the hell?". It's just what you enjoy.

A lot of those weren't too great. Although, that Digimon one (7th from the top) wasn't too bad. It may be the best one of those.

The little Sailor Moon is my youngest daughter. I am a begining seamstress so I spent 3 days making this for her. I really love that she got so much attention at Anime Boston and at Portcon last year. She loved her costume and it was all worth it to me. And yes her name is Serena ^-^

I personally give credit to people who cosplay... I'm never superficial. I hate dressing up and don't really care how I look... unless I'm cosplaying. Slightly contradictory to my last reply, I know, but I find a good cosplay extremely fun. XD
