ON a morning when I am suiting up to go out and shovel the snow from steps and porches, this beautifully written column matches my mood. thanks Martha! Seed packets lie waiting in a dark cupboard, small flower buds have appeared on my bedroom camellia... Spring feels too far away, but you just brought it nearer. Isn't it interesting how we humans count on the slowly turning seasons? Anticipation, yes.

I can report that Burpee and UPS have had electronic congress in regarding our order. Can the birds and bees be far behind?

For me, it's already spring. It became spring when baseball players reported for spring training. No matter that we had 3 or 4 inches of snow yesterday. Happy spring!

That looks entirely too depressing. When I was growing up in Ohio, there was a magnolia tree in our backyard that always bloomed on my birthday. In New York, the magnolias bloom two or three weeks earlier, making me feel old. And, with the warm weather, they look about to burst now.

Countdown is a mess, but because I'm as big a DC boy as your are a DC girl, I need to stick it out until the end. It's amazing to me just how off target a series can be. Countdown was full of good intentions and you know how that old saying goes.

I've always loved winter, what with it being dark from 4:30 in the afternoon on, but for some reason, this year it's killing me. I need the temp to rise, for the sun to stay out longer and to get out of the house. I think being a fan of winter has finally passed for me.
