ComicMix at Toy Fair: Coverage Round-Up and Extra Photos

All the news that's news... and then some

Well, Toy Fair is officially over, folks. All that's left is to sweep up the wayward Legos, find a place for all of the free promotional swag, and calmly reflect on the passing of yet another convention.

Oh, and there's always the "Clip Reel" -- or, as we call it in the InterWebs News, the "Round-Up" article. So, just in case you missed any of our Toy Fair 2008 coverage, here are some of the announcements, audio, video and photos from Toy Fair '08 we collected thus far.

We still have some audio and video wrap-up coverage, including today's edition of ComicMix Radio, so keep an eye on the site over the rest of the week. As a special "bonus feature" of sorts, I've included a few photos after the round-up below of some sights, scenes, and, of course, toys that  were favorites of the ComicMix crew but didn't quite fit into the rest of our coverage.

And now for a few photos from Toy Fair that I want to post, well, just because they had us talking at one point or another.

First up is this life-size Dalek that appeared to be guarding a large assortment of Doctor Who merchandise. To be honest, I spent a few minutes contemplating ways to roll drag it off and make it our ComicMix mascot, but I'm fairly certain it wouldn't fit in a taxi.

These Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles statues in the NECA booth looked amazing, especially with their return to the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comic-book designs -- none of those color-coded outfits here!

During our tour of the Mattel showroom, the display of upcoming toys based on the Speed Racer film really made us all pause. The racing track (seen at the right side of the photo) and the new "Mach 6" vehicle were packed with details that impressed the heck out of each and every one of us there. This figure based on Scut Farkus, the bully from A Christmas Story, looks as evil as the character on which its based -- right down to the scuzzy coonskin cap. Think of the irony when you use it for target practice with your BB gun!

What to say about this "headshot" statue, based on a character from the Gears of War videogame and produced by NECA? You have to admire the level of concentration it required of the sculptor to get the airborne pieces of skull and cerebrum looking just right.

And because one photo wasn't enough, I made sure to get a closeup. It's impressive in that "I think I'm going to be sick" sort of way, eh?

Last, but certainly not least, we liked this massive display in the storefront window of a deli near the Diamond Select showroom. We contemplated the best way to run off with this one, too, but decided to buy a coffee instead.
