Horror hostess was 86
Boing Boing points us to the passing of Maila Nurmi, famous for her portrayal of the original horror movie hostess Vampira, on this past Thursday. Miss Nurmi was 86.
We raise a glass of O+ in her memory.

A genuine American original (though Finnish-born and inspired by a Chas. Addams character) -- often imitated, never surpassed. Even Spike Jones promoted a bogus Vampira, as voiced by Loulie Jean Norman on that once-famous monster-rally album of 1959, "Spike Jones in Stereo." Never got the impression here that Maila Nurmi was playing the Vampira shtik for camped-up hokum -- more of a droll and brooding strangeness about her, quite unlike Cassandra Peterson's later "Elvira" act.
