I'm having a lot of trouble thinking I'd like the new Hairspray. From what I'd read, Travolta is the star (and look at that cover) and he's playing the mom straight, rather than drag. I really like the John Waters version.

Waters himself said that what Divine brought to the role was anger. Travolta play Edna rather passively.

Oh, and PS; my apologies to Hairspray director ADAM Shankman, who I mistakingly named Dan in the column, and FYI: "that cover," as it's referred to, is a plastic wraparound that can be reversed to feature the young cast rather than Travolta and company. It's only on the 2-Disc Shake and Shimmy Edition (the single disc's cover is of the entire cast), which I referred to in the column as the Shimmy and Shake edition. Wow...for a movie I liked I sure made a buncha mistakes!
