None of the suits may have won, but books are certainly banned from schools. Locally, 100 Years of Solitude was banned because of the sex. Huckleberry Finn has been banned in many schools. And then there are the times that a nice liberal person would like a book removed from the library and they won't, so you have to hide it.

Brian, the preview of this showed the book titles italicized properly with .i. and that's missing from the final post.

As a Librarian (after twenty years I still love saying that!), I've had to deal with numerous patron complaints about this or that particular book. Each library system has its own policy for dealing with this, but I can only remember one time where we actually removed a book from our collection. Even then it was at the request of a publisher who was being threatened by several groups.I actually think that "Freedom to Read" would be a much better name for what the ALA is trying to promote. You are generally right that few books are actually banned, despite cases where books have temporarily been restricted or removed from the shelves. Fortunately, most these have been returned after clearer heads prevailed.Of course, I'd be in favor of burning every copy of the VERY, QUIET CRICKET, but that's just me!
