It's tough to get creative people to organize. If we wanted to cooperate with each other, we'd work in offices. Too often, we think, "If I make it easier for all freelancers, it's going to be that much tougher for me."

In fact, we all do better when we look out for each other.

I was always curious about the circumstances regarding the DC Explosion/Implosion of the late 70s/early 80s.

They ended up cancelling not only them many titles that had premiered, but cancelling several more in addition.

I was wondering if this was due to market conditions (as has been the explanation) or did the threat of talent organization play a large part in this?

Clearly, market conditions played a lot to do with it -- and I was with DC Comics at the time. The newsstand sales from the previous winter were dismal. But that didn't come as a surprise to anyone; just the reaction.

Marvel actually canceled about as many titles, but they took their time. DC did it in one fell swoop. Sure, there's such a thing as coincidence, but I was taught to perceive "multiple causation," and I keep my mind open to it. Clearly, with soft sales the last thing the publishers wanted to do was reach deeper into their pockets and pay freelancers more money or give them any "rights."
