You should realize that "Chance In Hell" IS related to Gilbert's PALOMAR material, in that this is the first of the "low-budget movies" he's doing that Luba's sister Fritz appeared in during her film career. (Not sure, but I think she's one of the trio of hookers the pimp friend is running in the middle section.) Which is also why it's a "Hollywood quicksand pit." Not saying any of that's reason to like or dislike the book, just that it explains much of the structure and style.

Nice review. I think I took a bit more away from it than you did, but I can certainly understand the obtuse nature of the story turning people off. It's the kind of book that you mull over and make connections and interpretations long after reading (for me at least). If you want, check out my take here:
