Joe Matt openly admits in interviews that he has no talent or interest in fiction, but rather enjoys cartooning about themes he finds interesting. Basically his life, how he sees it with the world around him. I'd imagine that many people, including myself, find his honesty enjoyable... and the execution of it in comicbook format even more so.

Overall, I enjoyed SPENT immensely. I think that many a reviewer judges this book on 'what is lacking' or 'what it isnt' - rather than judging it for what Joe intended it to be.

I think SPENT is done masterfully.
Can't wait for the next book... if he can ever get his hand of it - :)
