That's a torturous experience - getting the distinct impression that something potentially horrible may be happening right in front of you, and having no idea how to do anything, or what to do. One hopes she is well and realizes that there are many who have swum through similar pipes full of filth and come out clean.

Jimmy Doohan told a story in "Trekkies" about that - he got what was basically one line short of a suicide note from a young girl. He contected her, talked to her on the phone, and told her he was going to be at a con nearby in a few weeks, and he expected to see her there. She came, and they talked some more. He basically kept in touch with this girl for a number of years. Some time later, she let him know that she went on to college, became an engineer, and credits him with functionally saving her life.

It is so wonderful how you are willing to share something so sad that happened in your life to help someone you don't even know. There should be more people like you in this world willing to do whatever it takes to help even if that means sharing something that sometimes we would rather not remember or would like to stay hidden. We never know who we are helping when we share our stories. Thank You I really loved your column and while reading it I felt that the words were coming from a place we do not normally want to be in. Good Job.

I was lucky in having a very supportive mother and a father who generally let me go my own way, once he learned that I wasn't the jock he wanted. I was never beat up in school, although being a fat kid with glasses I certainly got my share of ridicule. Fortunately, I had friends both at home and at school so it wasn't as horrible as it could have been.

Like you, I hope that girl does read this and realize that things won't always be as terrible as they seem now. She might not look back at these days and laugh, but she may be able to remember that nice man who talked to her and offered a way out.
