Damn. I've been totally meaning to try the Berzerker books, now it's just gonna seem like bandwagon-jumping.

With that and Lanier's death (whose hiero's books I HAVE read and enjoyed) earlier this week, we're losing the old guard of SF writers. The ones who were more interested in telling a good story than in making sure the science in their books was plausible and realistic. Sometimes I feel the new writers forget about the latter half of the phrase "Science Fiction".

A big ring-shaped world - entertaining. Making sure we know the exact weight of the ice-asteroid we shoot at Mars to help terraform it - entertaining?

Giant world-sized weapons with no drivers careening around the universe - very entertaining.
