Webcomic News Roundup: Comic-Con, Remembered
No more Comic-Con news after this, I assure you...
Comic-Con International might be over, but the 'Net was full of San Diego-related reports this week from webcomic creators. I'll do my best to round-up some of those reports before getting into some of the news with no connection whatsoever to Comic-Con.
By far the most buzz-heavy event of the week in webcomics circles was the night out that began as an innocent webcomic creators' meet-up but later evolved into a drunken cabaret with Star Trek actors Jonathan Frakes and Avery Brooks. As Rich Stevens of Diesel Sweeties put it: "Screw the Holodeck. My reality is way more fantastic."
Here's one of the videos from the event making the rounds -- if nothing else, it's proof that such a surreal moment actually occurred:
On that note (pun totally intended), Scott Kurtz of PvP has a great recap of the events that transpired to make such an event possible, while also providing some video of his own from the night. Goats creator Jon Rosenberg also has a nice assessment of why Star Trek, a great bartender and eagle poop made this year's Comic-Con International such a magical experience. Oh, and Brad Guigar of Evil Inc. joined the chorus with his own recap of "The Night" (as it is now being called).

Also: Fleen looks at the Wowio/Platinum deal, more print publishers go online...
This week's roundup of webcomic news is arriving a little late because, well... I arrived a little late to this year's Comic-Con. It's a long story, and involves a sprained ankle (not mine), a "security breach" at a major airport, two canceled flights and a storm that had me expecting to see cows flying across the highway at any moment. That being the case, this week's roundup also features some images from the show floor that will hopefully be worth 1000 words -- because I'm still too jet-lagged to write 'em.
Overcompensating creator Jeffrey Rowland told me this week that he's "so excited not to be going to San Diego" -- and judging by my own experiences thus far, his excitement was justified. However, be sure to check out Tuesday's OC by guest artist (and animator) Carly Monardo, who provided one of my favorite moments of guest-ifaction in quite a while. Everyone does the robot! 'Nuff said.

Gary Tyrrell over at Fleen has been following recent developments on the Wowio/Platinum front with great attention. And rightly so, it seems. While you're over there, make sure to read the comment section for each post, as Fleen has become a lightning rod of sorts for creators involved with these developments.
I tracked down You'll Have That creator Wes Molebash at Comic-Con yesterday, and he told me about his recently launched YHT website at: www.yhtcomic.com. While he described the convention as "mediocre" at this point -- since he didn't have any new projects to promote this year -- he did say he was hard at work on his mysterious graphic novel project.

Webcomic News Roundup: Perry Bible Fellowship and BoaSas Go Global!
What's all this talk about something happening in San Diego?
While preparation for San Diego Comic-Con has been keeping most webcomic creators busy these days, there's still a lot of news popping up that has nothing to do with how many boxes of t-shirts have been shipped to the West Coast. Here are some of the highlights:
Jill-of-all-trades comics journalist Laura Hudson recently conducted a really, really spectacular interview with Perry Bible Fellowship creator Nicholas Gurewitch for Publisher's Weekly. In the interview, Gurewitch reveals some details about a potential BBC project involving PBF:
I'll be adapting a couple of the strips for the pilot, and I just got the news the other day that they wanted to make it longer because they liked the 12-minute treatment I sent. They want to make it a 30-minute pilot. I'm actually working with a British television company, Endemol Entertainment. A number of people there had ordered some prints from me, and apparently someone brought them into the office. It became known amongst them that they really liked the comic, and [making the pilot] was just a decision that came about organically because of that. They all realized they liked the strip, and said, “Why don't we do a show?”
In more international news, Steven L. Cloud has left the country! The Boy on a Stick and Slither creator officially embarked on his globe-trotting "Mongol Rally" charity event this week. Once everything gets underway, Cloud has promised that you'll be able to follow the adventure via Twitter. Be sure to check out my interview with Cloud for his thoughts on the event, and this Google Map showing the route they plan to take.

'Hammer of the Gods' hits ComicMix, the Mongol Rally looms!
By far, the biggest item of note this week was announced today, as one of the longest-running webcomics in the 'Tubes will now be collected in a series of 150-page Goats tomes. If you want to know the whole scoop, you can read my interview with Goats creator Jon Rosenberg here on ComicMix, as well as Gary Tyrell's mustachioed Q&A stylings over on Fleen.
Here's an excerpt from Tyrrell's interview:
Q: Any of your other material — earlier strips, the tantalizingly incomplete Patent Pending and Worlds of Peril, your minicomics (including the long hoped-for Operating Thetan III) — that might now see print as a result of this deal?
A: Anything is possible, but a lot of the projects you mentioned were ended for good reason. Patent Pending needs to be completely rethought and redone if I ever decide to work on it again, it would have made a better novel than comic I suspect. The Worlds of Peril comics were the inspiration for a lot of what makes up The Infinite Pendergast Cycle, I like to think that it’s the story of what takes place in the aftermath of Goats proper. It’s not canon, though, so don’t be reading too much into that.
The first minicomic is going to be reworked slightly to serve at the intro chapter for Infinite Typewriters. The second one could theoretically be included as an extra in one of the other volumes. I don’t have any plans to produce OT3 at this time but if I can fix some of the plot issues I could see it appearing in the future in some form, either as a standalone or as an arc of Goats.
