Brian K. Vaughan to Write 'Runaways' Movie

Sometimes I feel I've got to run away.

Big name superheroes like The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers aren't the only Marvel properties hitting the big screen.

The lesser known characters are getting their crack at film stardom, including the ragtag group of young heroes known as the Runaways.

Created in 2002 by Brian K. Vaughan as part of Marvel's Tsunami line, Runaways follows a group of kids who discover their parents are evil supervillains. Vaughn, who left the series at the conclusion of the second volume, will return to the property he co-created and write the script for the upcoming movie.

No director is currently attached to the film, but maybe they'll hire Richard Donner and the movie will be like a super-powered version of The Goonies.

Nick Fury May Appear in Future Marvel Films

Can the howling commandos be far behind?

Nick Fury's appearance in the special scene after the end credits of Iron Man may not be the last we see of the man with the eye patch.

Fans have assumed that Samuel L. Jackson will naturally resume the role in the forthcoming Avengers movie, but now we have a little more evidence to support that prediction. Well, not much, but at least it's something.

According to Devin Faraci at CHUD, Jackson recently met with Kevin Feige, the President of Production at Marvel Studios. The two haven't met since Jackson filmed the cameo scene in Iron Man. It's only idle speculation as to what the two met about, but Marvel could be getting a fast start on assembling its Avengers and getting them locked down with contracts.

The Avengers film is currently slated for release in July 2011.

'Punisher War Zone' Teaser Poster Released

What a waste of ammunition

Punisher War Zone won't be hitting theaters until December, but that's not about to stop the marketing machine at Lions Gate from advertising it. The first poster for the film has been released and, well, it's about what you'd expect. The Punisher loves bullets and he loves skulls, so why not combine the two?

It looks like an image ready made for a shirt at Hot Topic, if it isn't already on sale there already. At least the poster lets us know that lots of bullets will be fired in the film. Will there be anymore parking ticket antics with fire hydrants like in the last Punisher movie though?

Punisher War Zone hits theaters on December 5. The film stars Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle/The Punisher, Dominic West as Jigsaw and Wayne Knight as Microchip.

Official 'Hellboy II' Poster Revealed

Does Hellboy even own a shirt?

When it comes to comic book movies this summer, most of the attention has been focused on Iron Man and The Dark Knight. What about the man with the big red fist?

Hellboy II: The Golden Army hits theaters on July 11 and has the potential to be the best of the lot. After all, Academy Award nominated director Guillermo del Toro is at the helm of the picture and it stars Ron Perlman. Everyone loves Ron Perlman, right?

The marketing machine for the upcoming sequel is starting to kick into gear, beginning with the release of the official one-sheet poster you're sure to see in the multiplex soon. Sure, it's not as cool as the Drew Struzan poster, but nothing is. Struzan posters are just too awesome for the common man. Besides, this official poster has everything you need to know about the film: there's a red guy with a big fist and a gun. Enough said.

For a look at the full sized poster, visit Superhero Hype and judge for yourself how cool Hellboy's leather pants are.

(And if you haven't done so already, check out our ComicMix TV interviews with del Toro and cast of Hellboy II: The Golden Army)

Witchblade Hits the Big Screen with New Movie

The witchy woman goes Hollywood.

Why should Marvel and DC be the only comic book companies making serious bank at the box office? Top Cow Productions has officially begun work on a live-action feature adaptation of their popular Witchblade comic book series.

The series already spawned a live-action television show on TNT that lasted for two seasons. Plus, half naked women beating up bad guys with an awesome glove is the type of can't miss concept that Hollywood craves.

The producers hope to start production of the film in September.

First 'Dragonball' Poster Revealed

20th Century Fox knows how to tease the Dragonballs

Dragonball may not be coming out until next year, but 20th Century Fox is getting an early jump on advertising. The first teaser posters for the film have been spotted in the wild and they're, well, about what you would expect: a picture of a ball.

If someone was unfamiliar with the concept behind Dragonball, they might just think it's a sports movie similar to Rollerball or a film inspired by Marble Madness. Depending on how you feel about the manga and the anime, those might be preferable options.

Slashfilm has the full-sized picture of the teaser poster if you can't get enough pictures of balls.

'Mortal Kombat Versus DC Universe' A Reality?

It's no 'Marvel vs Capcom 3,' but it's certainly interesting

There were rumors back in Fall 2007 that the next Mortal Kombat game would pit the Kombatants against superheroes from the DC Universe, but they were quickly scoffed at and ignored.

After all, how could these two universes possibly come together? Would DC really allow Scorpion to rip Batman's head off? Foolishness!

Well, all those people look like the fools now. Mortal Kombat Online has gotten wind that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a reality.

The Mortal Kombat series is good at violence but poor when it comes to the comic book universe (see Malibu's Mortal Kombat comics). On the flip side, the DC superheroes are great at comics and poor when it comes to fighting games (see Justice League Task Force on the 16-bit consoles). Can these two great tastes combine and taste great together?

Not many details about the title are known at the moment. Future details (and an official confirmation from Midway) may be forthcoming on developer Ed Boon's website, Noob.com.

Black Panther Cartoon in Development

The comic animation waves continues...

Spider-Man and the X-Men are almost always on television in one animated form of another. Heck, even iron Man is getting an animated series these days. Can't we see new characters getting a shot at animated success instead of the same old same old?

Apparently, we can. During BET's network upfront presentation, it was announced that a Black Panther animated series will debut on the channel in the future.

No information was given as to when we can expect to see the series or what it will be like, but considering Reginald Huldin is BET's president of entertainment and also the current writer for the Black Panther comic series, the character should be in good hands.

'Catwoman' Cancelled With Issue #82

Time to dump out the litter box

After DC released its last round of solicitations, people naturally assumed Catwoman was being cancelled with issue #81. That's just unfounded nonsense. It's actually being cancelled with issue #82!

According to writer Will Pfeifer, Selina Kyle will get one more issue in August before her solo title officially gets the axe. Did she have to spend one of her nine lives to do it? If so, does she have any more to spare in order to get a series relaunch?

Perhaps in the future, but as of now, Pfeifer has no information on any future plans for Catwoman. Fans will just have to be happy with one extra helping of their favorite cat buglar for the time being.

'Watchmen' Action Figures Revealed

Who watches the toy aisle?

Back in 2000, DC Direct created figures based on Alan Moore's Watchmen to celebrate the comic's 15th anniversary. Unfortunately, a dispute caused Moore to pull out of the project and the figures were scrapped, never to see the light of day.

Fans wondered if they'd ever have a chance to own a plastic version of The Comedian and place it upon their computer desks for all the world to see, right between the empty bottles of Mountain Dew and the economy bag of Doritos.

Wonder no more, because Watchmen action figures are on the way! Since Moore steadfastly chooses not to have anything to do with Zack Synder's film adaptation of Watchmen, apparently it's kosher to make action figures based on it!

DC Direct will debut all of the figures at the New York Comic-Con on Friday, but Entertainment Weekly scored an early look at two of them: Nite Owl and Rorschach. The figures will be released in January of next year, which is enough time to buy them all before the film is released on March 6.

'Incredible Hulk' Poster Revealed

Don't tell me. There's a giant green man in jeans behind me, right?

The Incredible Hulk is looking to be the green-headed stepchild of the summer movie season.

Everyone is going gaga over The Dark Knight and Iron Man, while no one is paying any attention to the Hulk's film. Is it because of the negative opinion of Ang Lee's Hulk? Is it because no one really cares about the character, or is the film just being lost in a season of box office megahits?

The general apathy around the film is only increased by the fact that the film's very first poster was released today. Keep in mind the film is set to be released on June 13.

The poster is definitely evocative of the classic Incredible Hulk TV show, but will that be enough to get people in theaters?

Head over to IGN to see the full sized version of the green goliath's one sheet for yourself.

'Justice League' Film Delayed Again

You don't need kryptonite to kill this film, just tax laws

ComicMix previously reported that the Justice League film currently in production was having a few problems with tax breaks in Australia. Alas, the combined might of superheroes is no match for the tax system and the production of the film will have to move elsewhere.

Previously, Canada was cited as the likely destination of the film. However, now New Zealand is being floated as a possible candidate. Not only is it closer to Australia than Canada is, but special effects studio Weta Workshop is located there. Weta is responsible for designing the costumes for the film.

The film already has actors cast and a script ready, but the the inability to find a suitable location for filming could prevent Justice League from ever taking off. If the SAG ends up striking, it could be the final nail in the coffin for this troubled production.

'Heroes: Origins' Cancelled

Dead before it began

Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, has confirmed that the heavily hyped Heroes spin-off, Heroes: Origins, has officially been scrapped.

The series was originaly supposed to present the origins of characters with super powers, some of which would have been incorporated into the parent show. Top notch writers and directors like Kevin Smith and Eli Roth were attached to the spin-off before it was unceremoniously dumped.

No explanation was given for axing the spin-off, but the poor quality and declining ratings of the second season of Heroes may have been a factor. As for the parent show, it should return for a third season of 20 episodes if all goes well and the Screen Actors Guild doesn't go on strike this summer.
