Well, that sucks (creator getting screwed, not that you can't tell the tale).

You know, I have the First Comics promo poster (with DJ, Grimjack, Nexus, the Badger, Reuben Flagg and Jon Sable) in my den and sometimes I sigh with geek-longing when I pass it.

Yeah, I've got a Dynamo Joe story... but I can't tell it. It falls into the "another creator getting screwed" file, and I don't want to screw up any litigation.

Nexus and the Badger are two of my top 5 all-time favorite comic books, and I count Mike Baron as one of my favorite writers and top influences.

God, I miss the First Comics line. (Got any Dynamo Joe-related stories?)

Thanks for sharing some great moments.

I've seen that pic reproduced all over the place, and I still can't get over the fact they misspelled "industry". Maybe I have a future as a comic book editor.

(What am I saying? That's no kind of future!)

Great article, MOTU. Full of advice that those that need it most will ignore because they think it doesn't apply to them.

Mindy,

It was on January 2, a column named "The Enemy Within" where you postulated Diana's Pro-Life stance. You wrote, "yes, pregnancy, the unborn child, would be ultimate, holy, sacrosanct, untouchable, inviolable object of worship of a woman raised in this environment."

I thought this was a very enlightened take on Wonder Woman and posted that I would have loved to read that story arc.

I have to point out that this take on Wonder Woman makes it seem as though her opinion of pregnancy is one borne out of its rarity in her experience and if she had been a character of our world she may not feel the same way. But pregnancy’s relative routine status in our world makes it no less sacrosanct. Would Diana’s opinion change when she becomes, as you said, “acclimated.”

All that said, the point of this column, contraception, is, in my view, an entirely different subject and one that I have no issue with. In fact, using artificial or medical means to prevent conception is a decision similar to being celibate. Both practices prevent a life from being formed.

Joseph W:
Unfortunately, too many of these “pro-life” advocates don’t seem to give the least regard for the “post-birth” end of life.

This is a common unfounded canard that is consistently brought up to imply that the Pro-Life movement is hypocritical. In fact, The Pro-life movement does care for both the woman and her child before and after birth. Crisis pregnancy centers established around the country help women find jobs, apartments or housing with a volunteer if she is homeless, give her help with medical expenses, transportation to medical facilities, provide layettes for newborns, baby furniture, clothing for siblings and a host of other necessities. And these organizations exist without funding from governmental sources.

Excellent point about the small press. It is not only much more willing to give untried or less experienced creators a chance, many actually seek out such folks.

I have been working in comics for about four years and I've had numerous works published by various companies in that time. I have a friend who is about 12 years older than I am and has been trying to break into specifically DC for a good 20+ years by his own admission.

Why? Because he wants to write John Constantine and basically just Constantine.

He has had exactly one thing published ever: a short story I submitted on his behalf (with his permission) to a small press anthology. He is a decent writer and could make good in roads with the independent scene if he'd direct his energy there instead of towards a company that has thousands of people doing the exact same thing he is.

Good column, Mike. A few thoughts to add -- 1) if the would-be creator wants to work for DC or Marvel, those two companies don't give a shit about the character/concept YOU created. They have their OWN characters and you need to show you can do THEM. Don't show art/story pitches for Marvel characters to DC editors or vice versa. 2) Every comic being published already HAS a creative team. The newbie has to show they are not just as good as those people; they have to be better than them and better than those who have experience and are unemployed who will also be seeking work. What do yopu have that makes you unique? 3) Look to the smaller companies; look to the Independents. Look to lauching an online site. If your family and friends believe in you so much, see what money they're willing to invest. The secret about getting into comics is that you first have to be published SOMEWHERE. You need work to get work. How do you do it? Create the work and get it out there either through a small publisher or the Internet.

Finally -- this is the Real World. You don't get a trophy just for showing up. Do the work.

'Nuff said.

Not having read your reasoning for Diana's being "pro-life," I would suggest that Diana--once she's exposed to women facing UNWANTED or LIFE-THREATENING pregnancies--might be fully in favor of a woman's right to choose, bearing in mind that the Amazons come from an era where rape was essentially a man's RIGHT by law; she'd be more than familiar with the stories of situations where Zeus and Hades and Poseidon and even Heracles simply took women with pregnancy being the usual end result--just how many of those women WANTED to be "brood cows to the Gods?"

Now....if you mean "pro-life" in the sense of caring about the children once they've exited the vaginal canal, then yes, by all means, Diana would be "pro-life." Unfortunately, too many of these "pro-life" advocates don't seem to give the least regard for the "post-birth" end of life. Cuts to all sorts of beneficial social programs (one might note the GOPers even wanted cuts to programs designed to help PREGNANT WOMEN deliver HEALTHY BABIES) have been the norm for the "pro-life" advocates at ALL political strata (federal AND state).

If anything, Diana would be more critical of the "pro-life" movement for its sheer hypocrisy. Diana would call for programs to end bullying in school. She would demand that programs like WIC be immune from political grandstanding. She would expect that women's health issues be given as much importance as men's health (I can only imagine she'd be absolutely perplexed at the idea that insurance programs should cover the "Pill" for erectile dysfunction but not the "Pill" for pregnancy prevention, regardless of who the employer is or what faith s/he follows).

There ought to be two, different awards for dramatic presentations: One for feature film and another for televison series, etc. It just does't seem right that ATTACK THE BLOCK and Gaiman's DOCTOR WHO episode should be going up against each other.

Carolyn Ives Gilman's "The Ice Owl" is an incredible story and Ken Liu's "Paper Menagerie" is quite touching. Those get my votes in their respective categories.

Great post. It would be so much of a better world if everyone got themselves informed before making an opinion, and listening to the other side with an open mind.

Yup. Went to Archives to buy supplies and look at back issues and it was gone. It really died when Bill left. He is a Detroit legend. If he reads this get hold of me.
