EZ Street #1
Published by ComicMix, October 2007
Scott and Danny Fletcher just want to tell stories — fabulous stories about heroes and adventure. The brothers decide to create a comic book because, as young boys growing up on Ezelle Street in Pittsburgh, it's what they could do. But now they're grown up and have jobs, responsibilities, debt and stress. Danny is a graphic designer and Scott tries to make movies in Hollywood. And they want much more from their lives...

J.C. Vaughn (12:41 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
An outstanding debut! I can't wait to sit back and see where this story goes.
This will be a regular read for me and I'll be sending lots of people this way. Best of luck to Mark, Bob and all at ComicMix on what is a truly interesting venture.
MARK WHEATLEY (12:45 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
Thanks everyone - and you ain't seen nothing yet! Bob and I are pushing each other far beyond each other's comfort zones. Just one small part of the reason we enjoy working together.
Neil (1:57 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
Beautiful art and and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Bill Spangler (2:49 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
Beyond the comfort zone indeed. If this struck any closer to home, I'd be sitting in a smoking crater right now. Very nice job by all concerned.
MARK WHEATLEY (3:22 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
The comfort zone I was talking about was the creative one - Bob's writing suggests emotions that require that I come up with new art styles, for example.
On the other hand - I know exactly what you're talking about.
Todd Livingston (4:03 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
For a minute there I didn't know if I was reading a comic or having a flashback. Great job Bob and Mark! Looking forward to this!!
Paddy (4:11 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
I love the art style in this. It reminds me of the books we used in learning to read. It's familiar but at the same time new.
Adam (5:01 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
Hi Mark, really well done and engaging! I am very interested to read more. Great job!

Batton Lash (3:44 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
Bob and Mark, you're off to a flying start. Looking forward to the next installment. Who said comics can't work on the web? "Naysayers" be damned!
Good luck with this exciting new venture and venue.
Mike Gold (2:51 AM on Sat Oct 6, 2007)
"Naysayers be damned, indeed! That just might become our new motto. Thanks, Batton.
David Z (11:41 PM on Wed Oct 3, 2007)
Beautiful work here, and really intriguing to see where it can go. I'll stay tuned!
Matthew Ceplina (1:06 AM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
Nice start. Anyone can on some level relate to the opening segment. Overall, its a nice break from "traditional" comics in both content and form. Look forward to next week's installment.
Joseph Button (5:06 AM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
Incredible start to a story that I feel is about to give me a very vivid glimpse into my future.
Great job, guys. I can't wait until next Wednesday.

OK, OK... I like it too. I really enjoy the painted panels. You using Painter or PShop?
MARK WHEATLEY (10:11 AM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
What you're seeing in the color work for EZ STREET is 100% Photoshop. I do use Painter in some limited ways when I'm painting illustrations, covers etc. - but that is mostly for surface texture effects. I used Painter that way on the RUNT story in the FABLES hardcover 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL. I thought the overt texture of the paint brought a romantic quality to the RUNT story - but for EZ STREET I'm convinced it would be distracting. In fact it was tough to keep it from being distracting in RUNT.

Totally dig that prologue!
Elayne Riggs (2:58 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
I adore the art, it flows just beautifully. The plot seems a little inside-baseball for me, but I'd be curious to see where you're headed with it. It still captures the obstacles that all creative people (not just comic book creators) face when trying to live their dream.
Scott Bieser (3:05 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
You know, I think I'm going to love this story most of all. Can't wait for the next installment.
Ron Good (6:56 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
Ain't THAT the truth!
Why am I hearing Jim Broadbent's voice saying "One day, ALL THIS could be yours!"?
Great comic! I'm glad you guys stuck with it.
MARK WHEATLEY (7:15 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
I think both Bob and I have had early success. But we also have both had - er - interruptions of the work. Not that we have not kept busy. I've followed Robert Heinlein's advice of - "walk the dog" - and have gained credits across a wide spectrum of creative enterprises. And for the most part that has been fun. And I've spent a lot of time letting the cat in and out - while gainfully employed of course.
Ron Good (8:03 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
I've enjoyed your work for many years. It's nice to be able to communicate with you this way. Ah, technology!!! I hope you and Bob have a lot of success with this comic!
Keep living the dream!
MARK WHEATLEY (8:32 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
Ain't it cool? Like doing comics on stage!
Joanna Estep (7:03 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
Mark, Bob, this is just fantastic. I've of course been sneaking peeks at it during conventions, but it's nice to finally get to spend some quality time with it. Looking forward to more!
Ron Zoso (8:00 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
Very nice start guys. You've accomplished what all continuing stories need to do, leave the reader wanting more.
And I definitely want more. This is going to be fun.
Christopher Mills (11:07 PM on Thu Oct 4, 2007)
Marvelous.
Michael H. Price (9:59 AM on Fri Oct 5, 2007)
"EZ Street," man! This is how it feels to be alive and certain of one's direction -- and obstacles be damned. Some of the most passionately felt storytelling I've seen in years, honoring the legacies of Will Eisner and Jean Shepherd in bold and adventurous strokes. Brilliant, yep.
shane oakley (5:21 PM on Fri Oct 5, 2007)
ullo, bob and mark, this is lovely comics, much intrigued - and the art is GORGEOUS! look forward to eyeballing the rest - BRAVO!
Robert Tinnell (2:37 PM on Sun Oct 7, 2007)
Sorry to be so late in saying "thank you" to everyone for reading and commenting on EZ. But for some reason I haven't been able to post for a few days...It was frustrating given the number of very kind remarks. Which brings me to point two - I love the interactivity that ComicMix provides. Reader feedback is so valuable - especially instantaneous feedback - all the more so given the solitary nature of what we do. I hope you all continue to enjoy what we're doing - it's been a blast.
thanks again,
bob

Thank God I have a reason to read online comics again. It's good to have something of value out here again. The drought is over. Bravo comicmix!
Cheers,

ABSO-BLOODY-LUTELY BRILLIANT.

Mark and Robert,
I'm ashamed to be the last one commenting on this strip. It's the same professional work I'm used to seeing from you while blazing new trails at the same time.
Or, to put it another way, I liked it a whole lot.
I'll admit when reading the synopsis, I ended up on the floor in the fetal position, but that's my problem.
I feel comics is the latest addition to what's considered fine art.
EZ Street is fine art. Can't wait for the next installment.
