EZ Street #1

Scott and Danny Fletcher just want to tell stories — fabulous stories about heroes and adventure. The brothers decide to create a comic book because, as young boys growing up on Ezelle Street in Pittsburgh, it's what they could do. But now they're grown up and have jobs, responsibilities, debt and stress. Danny is a graphic designer and Scott tries to make movies in Hollywood. And they want much more from their lives...

The comfort zone I was talking about was the creative one - Bob's writing suggests emotions that require that I come up with new art styles, for example.
On the other hand - I know exactly what you're talking about.

Nice start. Anyone can on some level relate to the opening segment. Overall, its a nice break from "traditional" comics in both content and form. Look forward to next week's installment.

What you're seeing in the color work for EZ STREET is 100% Photoshop. I do use Painter in some limited ways when I'm painting illustrations, covers etc. - but that is mostly for surface texture effects. I used Painter that way on the RUNT story in the FABLES hardcover 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL. I thought the overt texture of the paint brought a romantic quality to the RUNT story - but for EZ STREET I'm convinced it would be distracting. In fact it was tough to keep it from being distracting in RUNT.

I adore the art, it flows just beautifully. The plot seems a little inside-baseball for me, but I'd be curious to see where you're headed with it. It still captures the obstacles that all creative people (not just comic book creators) face when trying to live their dream.

I think both Bob and I have had early success. But we also have both had - er - interruptions of the work. Not that we have not kept busy. I've followed Robert Heinlein's advice of - "walk the dog" - and have gained credits across a wide spectrum of creative enterprises. And for the most part that has been fun. And I've spent a lot of time letting the cat in and out - while gainfully employed of course.

Very nice start guys. You've accomplished what all continuing stories need to do, leave the reader wanting more.

"EZ Street," man! This is how it feels to be alive and certain of one's direction -- and obstacles be damned. Some of the most passionately felt storytelling I've seen in years, honoring the legacies of Will Eisner and Jean Shepherd in bold and adventurous strokes. Brilliant, yep.

Sorry to be so late in saying "thank you" to everyone for reading and commenting on EZ. But for some reason I haven't been able to post for a few days...It was frustrating given the number of very kind remarks. Which brings me to point two - I love the interactivity that ComicMix provides. Reader feedback is so valuable - especially instantaneous feedback - all the more so given the solitary nature of what we do. I hope you all continue to enjoy what we're doing - it's been a blast.

Mark and Robert,
I'm ashamed to be the last one commenting on this strip. It's the same professional work I'm used to seeing from you while blazing new trails at the same time.
Or, to put it another way, I liked it a whole lot.
I'll admit when reading the synopsis, I ended up on the floor in the fetal position, but that's my problem.
I feel comics is the latest addition to what's considered fine art.
EZ Street is fine art. Can't wait for the next installment.
