I can’t believe how melancholic I still feel about HEROES. Amazing first year, total disaster later. The pitfalls of serialized fiction!

I was also surprised by how many people seemed to think they would keep Ned alive in GAME OF THRONES, even people who were told that his death was in keeping with the novels. It’s not only a matter of being faithful to the original, but keeping the very themes and tone of the story. A world where Ned miraculously survived just would not be the world George R. R. Martin created.

But, you know, I can see how the increasing despair and bleakness of Westeros can wear lots of people out, in the long term. It’s not the main reason I tired of the novels, though. Without revealing spoilers, I can only say that after three amazing books, it seems like Martin is just bidding his time in the last two novels. It felt like reading a 1000 pages of interlude.
