    It’s really awful that when Jesse Owens won his gold medals in Berlin, FDR refused to acknowledge it or even invite him to the White House. I can understand why, years later, Cassius Clay (before he became Muhammad Ali) threw his medal into a river after being refused service at a restaurant.

    Incredible just how complicated history really is. Rarely is it so simple that such momentous moments and change can be attributed to the actions of just one….but more likely, it is the combined effort and momentum of a series of moments that culminates in snap shots in time that represent the efforts of the collective. Great article, thank you! I truly appreciate gaining perspective of the industry of comics against the history of the country.
