The lead character is Samwise. He manipulated the Baggins clan to reveal the ring, used Gandalf to research it and create the fellowship, and then made sure that Frodo disposed of it properly. This is his story: everyone else just serves it.

Paul’s right. Sam is the true heart of the story, always has been. He may not have been quite as Machiavellian in my view as Paul describes, but yeah, he was the prime mover; he got the ring revealed, nudged Gandalf in the direction he needed to go, kept Frodo moving, and made sure the Ring was destroyed. Without Sam, nothing would’ve happened.

  4. Kyle Gnepper says:

The lead character is Frodo. Samwise is more heroic in the end, but its really Frodo who makes the greatest journey. He is tasked to carry the ring and destroy it. He sees and goes to the worst he has to offer for the great task and after its over returns.

Sam and the others may protect or even save him, but this is Frodo’s story.

I say Gollom is the lead character–he makes the series to me, his overwhelming madness demonstrates the evil inherent in the ring.

  7. LASNODIE says:

The main character is the ring itself. It’s what makes everybody act the way they do. Their lust for it, their passion…their preccccciousssss.

Are you asking who is the protagonist, or who is the hero? The protagonist is certainly Frodo. The story opens with him being given the ring, he goes on to choose the burden willingly, and it’s his footsteps in which we follow the story. And it is his act of compassion toward Gollum that allows the quest to end in any sort of triumph.

On the other hand, if you’re asking who is the hero, I would have to say Sam. As I wrote in my essay, “A Fool’s Hope,” the ring-quest is one that can only be completed by a fool, not a traditional hero, and Sam is the epitome of the fool-hero – simple, humble, stout-hearted and loyal, driven by his devotion to Frodo to follow him through the hell of Mordor. It is a testament to Sam’s strength that he is able to heal from the ring quest and go on to live a happy life, where Frodo cannot.

Glenn, Shanti has nailed it. If there’s only one winner in all this, well, there ya go.

Which gets my old hippie ass out of a sling because I don’t have a Blu-ray player.
