Good column, Elayne! Your musings on the Bible I think are especially relevant. The rector at my church (It's funny; I go to church more as an agnostic than I did as a simple lapsed Catholic.) often makes the point that those who insist on a literal interp of the Bible are like those who mistake a road map for the road. To my mind, insisting that the Bible be literally and historically "true" robs it of its power. It's myth, it's poetry — both of which are very powerful. It doesn't hand the truth to you in sound bites; it points you in the direction of the truth. It is a tool to find the truth — which is why I'm so leery of dogma. People shouldn't tell you what the Bible "means" — we're supposed to do that ourselves. Oops. Here comes Mike Baron to tell us we're both going to hell. Hi Mike!
