I would imagine one of the reasons a good number of folks who can make movies happen in Hollywood continue to invoke the mantra of ” black means death” when it comes to superhero movies is the fact that the element of color becomes their focus as opposed to telling a great story. “Blade” was incredible because it had a great director, was a great vehicle for Wesley Snipes, the script stayed true to the spirit of the property, and the color of the main character was not used as the “selling point” of the movie. Put the level of care, budget, backing and desire to see the film succeed into movies with superheroes who aren’t white and I bet the industry would have to retract the tired excuse that they so often fall back on (sorry if I’m on a bit of a rant). Oh, and I agree about Jim Steranko’s Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D! Some great stuff (have you ever met him?)

    • Mark, I’m pleased to say that Jim is a friend and the coolest mofo in the biz. One day I’ll write about the call I got from Jim BEFORE I knew him that almost gave me a heart attack as he was not happy about something and it was my fault.

Thirty years ago I watched the first Conan movie at a theatre in downtown St. Louis with a crowd that was well over 90% black.
I had already read the comic adaptation and sometime during the movie it occurred to me that I was surrounded by black people and this giant white guy with the German accent was going to cut off the head of the preeminent black actor of his generation. It gave me pause but I needn’t have worried. When Arnold cut off James Earl Jones’ head there were cheers and applause.
I’d like to think that would be the case if the situation was reversed but I suspect not.

    • George,
I may be bias but I think seeing an action movie with a Black audience is just so much fun. I also think if the situation was reversed the reaction would be the same.

OK, first… Samuel L. Jackson attends your Comic Con parties? Did ALL the cool guests show up after I left?! Second, my only problem with Jackson’s casting is that he’s a good decade or more too old to be the lead in a good Nick Furry movie. A good Nick Furry Movie has to be based on Steranko’s work and Jackson can’t pull it off, but only because he’s a bit too old. Put a black actor, that can play a real bad ass, in his late 40’s in a Steranko based movie and it would be fine.

    • Doug,

How could all the cool people show up after you leave when you yourself are one of those people? But all the movie stars and mover’s and shaker’s showed up after you left ;-)

Back in the day…an action movie (martial arts, sci-fi, comics, horror, etc) with a Black audience was all kinds of fun and laughter! As Micheal said, it’s the EXPERIENCE…of known and shared responses.

And yeah…although I definitely believe that certain characters can be successfully transposed with actors of different ethnicities…but sometimes an Iconic figure needs to stay in play. As much as I dig Michael Clarke Duncan…the Kingpin he was not.
